Meet Joel L. Pelavin, M.D.
Dr. Joel Pelavin is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine class of 1979. He interned at Henry Ford Hospital and completed his ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Kresge Eye Institute in 1983. He is board certified in ophthalmology and has been in private practice since 1983 in the city of St. Clair Shores. From 1983-1993 Dr. Pelavin was an instructor of ophthalmology in the Wayne State University residency program.
Cataract surgery has been a special interest of Dr. Pelavin and he currently performs the small incision sutureless technique utilizing topical anesthesia. Dr. Pelavin has performed refractive surgery for nearsightedness and astigmatism since 1993 initially using radial and astigmatic keratotomy. He now performs Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and LASIK with the Excimer laser enabling him to treat all varieties of refractive errors. Dr. Pelavin frequently lectures before community and medical groups on ophthalmic topics and is a member of numerous state and national medical societies. He is on the medical staffs of St. John and Cottage Hospitals and the Detroit Medical Center.
A lifelong resident of Southeastern Michigan, Dr. Pelavin is an avid family man. For recreation, he enjoys his black standard poodle, "Oliver", plays piano, golfs, reads and exercises. He has a passion for travel and has made trips to Central America, Europe and South Africa. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Pelavin belongs to the Macomb County Chamber of Commerce and the Harper Avenue Business Association of St. Clair Shores.
