Trichiasis refers to misdirected eyelashes, which touch the eyeball or cornea causing a foreign body sensation and irritation of the eye. They may result from chronic blepharitis, injuries or eyelid surgery. They are usually easily removed in the office at the examining microscope with a fine forceps, but often will reoccur after a few months. Permanent removal requires ablation of the eyelash follicle with a laser or electrical current. Large areas of trichiasis can be treated with freezing of the involved portion of the eyelid or surgical excision.
